Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko – Episode 7

The last episode of Denpa Onna ended on a sort of a cliffhanger.  The various members of the protagonist’s harem had all converged on his house, and his hot aunt had stepped out on a pretext so that they could have their privacy!  I think they were going to battle for him with their cookery?  I dunno how Erio is gonna participate.  I mean, she can summon pizza from the aether, but I’m pretty sure that’s considered cheating.  In fact, I’m not sure there’s any contest Erio could successfully participate in to earn the protagonist’s affection.  A beauty contest, maybe.  I don’t see it personally, but the characters in the show consider her beautiful, and it’s their opinion that counts.  Well, perhaps she’ll surprise me in episode 7 of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko.

…thirty minutes pass…

Maekawa's newest cosplay? Hououin Kyouma from hit time travel slice of life anime Steins;Gate.

This episode was pretty sweet.  It started off a little slow, but then again it was nice to get a look inside Maekawa’s head.  She’s quiet, and not emotionally demonstrative like the other two girls, so I’m glad the writers decided to give her the screen to herself for a while.  She has her own flavor, I guess, and it has just been being overwhelmed by Ryuushi’s.  She is a delicately constructed piece of sushi, and Ryuushi is a giant dollop of wasabi.

Loved the harem antics.  As expected, Erio was incapable of meaningfully cooking, but I didn’t realize she couldn’t even bathe herself.  I mean, up to a point, weakness and defenselessness can be adorable, but eventually it just becomes too much effort to keep her from futon-rolling herself off a cliff, or sticking her tongue in a light socket because she thought there might be alien signals in the house’s wiring.  (Not as ridiculous as it sounds!  There’s a lot of bandwidth in the power system that is basically all going to waste.  Broadband over powerlines is the future.)

Ryuushi’s relationship with the protagonist seems to be going well, and I’m glad.  She was threatening him with a knife for getting close to Erio, does she have a bit of yandere tendencies, perhaps?  Sadly, no.  Rather, she has (correctly) identified that yanderes are adorable, and so she is affecting certain of their behaviors, like how a girl might identify that flowers smell nice and then splash flower-scented water on herself so that she will smell like flowers.  Everybody involved knows that the girl is not actually a flower, but that doesn’t stop it from being aesthetically pleasing.

Little worried about where the story is headed, with this creepy dude who launches bottle rockets.  He is an Outsider, and I’m worried that he will represent some big point that the story is going to make about how Outsiders Can Be Cool Guys Too.  Only time will tell, though.

If anything, I don’t think that Ryuuko will get anywhere else with Makoto. She’s going to end up in the friend zone as Makoto is obviously pining for Erio.

I guess I hadn’t thought about it that way. It’s a shame, if true. Given that the title of the show is Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, I guess it might be too much to ask for someone other than the titular denpa onna to win out. Oh well.
