Last episode on Ika Musume, Ika Musume failed to conquer Japan. Keep at it, Ika Musume! We all believe in you! Let’s see if she can pull it off in episode 4 of season 2 of Shinryaku! Ika Musume.
…thirty minutes pass…
We'll greet you as a liberator ❤
Yeah, this sort of episode is why I keep watching Ika Mususme. Sometimes it’s just firing on all cylinders.
Of course the best part of the episode was the first part, where Cindy teaches Ika Musume English. I wonder if there’s anything in the world better than crosslinguistic puns? I was once watching an anime where one of the voice actors was just completely butchering the English in his lines, and I turned to the person sitting next to me and said, “leggo my eigo“. I thought that was pretty great. Not all of the crosslinguistic puns in this episode were quite up to that standard of quality, but they did keep an unbroken chain of them going for an impressively long time, and the fact that they started getting a little absurd by the end was funny in its own right. Plus, we got to call Cindy a bimbo. (I thought it was interesting how they clearly got a different, native-English-speaking voice actor for Cindy’s English lines, but the other characters used the same voice actors. It’s nice to see that they went the extra mile to keep the distinction between natively-spoken English and English as a second language, even though most of their audience probably can’t tell the difference.)
I find it hard to blame Ika Musume for the events of the second part of the episode. She can’t even watch morning exercises without starting to throw food all over the place, what do you expect to happen when you teach her how to tickle people? Eiko should have been able to see that coming, and it was her recklessness that was entirely to blame. She did the equivalent of handing a loaded gun to a machine for firing loaded guns at people and then getting mad when it fired the gun at someone. Or maybe that was her plan all along, to get the gun to fire at her sister. Or maybe the plan all along was for the gun to fire at her sister, miss, and then her sister to get mad and destroy the gun-firing machine. It seems a silly thing to have around anyway, unless you frequently need people shot.
In the third part, we got the long-awaited return of Mini-Musume. Unfortunately, she couldn’t stay long, and they didn’t do much with her other than have her be cute. Granted, she is adorable. There were some good gags in this part, but I still don’t like the image of Ika Musume as a sore loser that is pitied by grade-school children so much that they just let her win at everything. That’s an incredibly sad fate. I wouldn’t wish that on a character I didn’t like, like Sanae. I can’t bear it happening to the only good character in the show.
