From the top! Actually let’s skip over Nichijou because there seems to be some uncertainty about who is the best group to follow, and the current top candidate released a PATCH for their translation rather than releasing an updated version with the fixes already patched into it. I can understand how you might want to provide a lightweight download for people who already have the main file, but think about people who are just now joining your translation? Do we want to fuss with your patching program which might turn out to actually be a virus? No, we want to download things and have them Just Work. So, let’s watch Sket Dance, which is about some student group dedicated to helping people or something.
…thirty minutes pass…
Why are they French all of the sudden?
“Support, Kindness, Encouragement, Troubleshoot”. Not a bad slogan to live by. There is something good and beautiful about working diligently for the benefit of the general public. And there is a different but no less transcendent beauty in hanging around a club room doing not much of anything other than mildly provoking each other out of boredom.
I guess the best way to describe this show would be, heartwarming? It seems, uh, optimistic, in a way I haven’t seen since Gatekeepers. It says, goodness and happiness are there to be had, there exist in this world people who want to help others, with Passion, Friendship, and Justice, with Support, Kindness, Encouragement, and Troubleshoot. These characters are not perfect people, a lazy action show fan, a crude and violent girl, and a nerdy privacy-invading guy, but they all come together to create something more. In fact, their imperfections only make it more optimistic, because we live in an imperfect world, and Sket Dance is saying that even in an imperfect world, we can love one another.
There were jokes, too! Some of the jokes were just random nonsensical wackiness, but some of the jokes actually worked out. Himeko seems like she is going to be a huge offender in terms of having “jokes” that are really just random violence, but she is adorable, so maybe we can forgive her.
I saw the resolution coming, but that didn’t really bother me. This show seems like more of a journey show than a destination one, more focused on the friends coming together than the coming together to solve mysteries. Compare that to a show with a similar premise, Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi, which was very focused on the actual events that occurred, with the members of the Otogi Bank not having much chemistry with one another. I think it helps that the Sket-dan only has 3 members. It also helps that none of the members of the Sket-dan are Akai Ringo.
So yeah, I’m interested in keeping watching this. It’ll be nice to have a little positivity in my life. 1/1 for Spring so far.
